Ports of Auckland has been selected as a finalist for the Terminal Operator of the Year in the 2015 Lloyd’s List Asia Awards; the only operator in the Southern Hemisphere to be shortlisted.
Ports of Auckland CEO Tony Gibson said that “Asia is home to some of the world’s biggest and best port operators, so to be chosen as a finalist in these awards is a real honour. It is a fantastic achievement by our people, who have turned this port around in the last four years, and to have recognition of their achievement on an international stage is very pleasing.”
The Lloyd’s List Asia Awards celebrate Asia and Australasia as a dynamic shipping region and a competitive arena for excellence, recognising industry leaders for their achievements. They are recognised within the maritime industry as one of the premier awards, with strong competition within all categories. This is reflected by the high calibre of the other finalists, including PSA International (Port of Singapore Authority, the world’s largest port operator) and Shanghai International Ports Group.
Ports of Auckland’s selection as a finalist for Terminal Operator of the Year reflects the huge improvement in productivity and performance made by the port since 2011. Ports of Auckland is currently the best performing container port in Australasia.
Last week, the port company announced container handling productivity and volumes as a major highlight from their 2014/2015 annual results. Record highs were recorded for container handling productivity on all measures and container volumes were to a record 972,434 TEU.
The selection as a finalist for the Terminal Operator Award also follows the news that Ports of Auckland are investigating the use of automation at their container terminal as a means to further improve productivity and capacity.
The winners of the Lloyd’s List Asia Awards will be announced on Wednesday, 28 October.
