Port of Auckland staff at the HRNZ awards

Port of Auckland were delighted to win the Future of Work award at the New Zealand HR Awards.

The Human Resources New Zealand (HRNZ) Awards recognise excellence and outstanding achievement within the HR community of New Zealand. Hundreds of leading HR professionals gathered on Thursday 14 March to celebrate the outstanding professionals and organisations leading meaningful change and best practice. The Future of Work Award recognises organisations who have evolved new ways of working embracing new technology and future thinking about work practices and have embedded these practices into their standard operating model.

HRNZ said Port of Auckland won the Future of Work Award for promoting strong collaborative relationships between management, unions, front-line workers, and the Taumata responsible for Māori and Pasifika outcomes. The strategy emphasizes a ‘High Performance High Engagement’ approach, prioritising respectful engagement and collaboration with all stakeholders. This cultural shift has been recognised by unions and other stakeholders as a significant change, leading to notable improvements in safety, customer satisfaction, and commercial performance for the port. It marks a remarkable turnaround for the organisation.

Chris Mills, GM People, Culture and Communications accepted the award on behalf of the port.

“We’re extremely proud of this recognition. As I reflect on the past two years our approach was to be transparent, to listen and take action through ‘High Performance, High Engagement’” he says.

“We have had great support from our union partners, particularly the Maritime Union of New Zealand. Thank you to our team mates that work 24 / 7 in all weather for Auckland. You trusted us with this new way of working and it’s you who make the port a better, safer place to work.”

Congratulations to all the other award winners and finalists.

In June 2023, Port of Auckland won the Collaboration Award at the Safeguard New Zealand Workplace Health and Safety Awards and in December the port was awarded the Most Improved Performance Award at the Deloitte Top 200 Awards.
