Ports of Auckland is bringing history to life with a series of FREE public events during the Auckland Heritage Festival, 19 September to 4 October.

Celebrate Auckland’s founding day and the opening of the Auckland Heritage Festival 2009 with a display of historical images from the past 169 years projected onto the blank canvas that is Shed 10 on Queens Wharf. Don’t miss this fantastic opportunity, brought to you by Auckland City Council and Ports of Auckland, to relive the city and port's shared history with family and friends.

Heritage Tug Boat Tours - sorry, fully booked!

Take a cruise back in time, touring Auckland’s busy port aboard the historic William C Daldy steam tug - one of the port’s first tug boats, dating back to 1935.

The hour-long, family-friendly tours will cruise through the commercial wharves, providing a close-up view of Port operations, and will guided by a detailed heritage commentary. The trip will also include a special stop at the Auckland Harbour Bridge, where the William C Daldy proved its might salvaging a piece of the bridge during its construction in 1958.

Bookings are essential. To book, phone 0800 AK PORT (0800 25 7678). Please note, spaces are filling fast.  As an alternative, check out our free weekly boat tours by ferry.

Tours depart Princes Wharf (click here for a map). Please arrive at least 10 minutes prior to departure. The tour is free; however a gold coin donation to the William C Daldy Preservation Society is appreciated.

Red Fence Heritage Walks

Sunday 20, Thursday 24, Sunday 27 September and Sunday 4 October at 3.00pm
Meet outside the NZ National Maritime Museum

Learn more about the dramatic history of the stretch of waterfront marked by Ports of Auckland’s magnificent red fence. Highlights include the Britomart Point Stone, the last remaining rock from Britomart Point where Auckland’s founding ceremony was held in 1840, the Rainbow Warrior Memorial near Marsden Wharf and conclusion of the tour at the Port’s observation deck overlooking the Fergusson container terminal.

The walk, up to an hour long, is suitable for all ages and fitness abilities. Bookings are not required. Click here for a map, showing the meeting point.
